When I was asked by Health Management Systems (HMS) to spearhead an initiative for installing a digital signage package at company headquarters, I was eager to learn more about the technology involved and help create a new communications channel for the company. Leading a team of security personnel, network administrators, facility employees, IT specialists and vendors, I was able to aid in producing a sophisticated content delivery solution for the company. A secure network was established for connecting eleven LED monitors on each floor. Monitors were placed near elevator banks and contained flash storage devices for housing multimedia content.
I designed templates, configured RSS feeds and produced graphics, videos and other content that was uploaded weekly to the monitor network. The RSS feeds included information like the weather, time and local news. These pieces of information were used to grab people’s attention, while custom graphics promoted company initiatives and information. I used video and audio sparingly to surprise people passing by. The monitor network is now a mainstay of the company’s headquarters in Irving, Texas. Employees have become accustomed to getting news as well as some entertainment while waiting for the elevators.
