The 2013 National RAC Summit was a valuable opportunity for Health Management Systems (HMS) to communicate directly to an audience that was critical to the company’s economic development. The only problem was that this particular audience happened to be a room of Healthcare professionals HMS was in the process of auditing. This awkward dynamic presented unique challenges in terms of designing HMS’s keynote presentation for the event. The challenge called for a less traditional approach for presenting HMS’s products and a plan inspired by the idiosyncratic mind of film director Wes Anderson (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, Fantastic Mr. Fox) was somehow born.
The presentation took on a humorous, droll and artistic tone for creating a storyline that captivated the audience and made them laugh instead of criticize. Rather than using traditional stock photography, I illustrated characters done in the style of Wes Anderson that were symbolic members of the, “School of RAC [Recovery Audit Contracting].” In this fictitious school, not everyone got along, but everyone was trying to achieve the same goal. The audience walked away with an understanding that their organization and HMS were actually trying to achieve the same goal as well.
